I agree with Itimpi. This is a Hardware (communications) interface issue, not a Calibre issue.

Bad Cable
failing storage media (SD cards have limited cycls (lots, but limited)
bad USB port

IMHO detachable devices should not be set any way but "Allow quick removal" (turns off write cache)
