I suspect you are right, and will consider rooting and trying LCD2eink after I get home from a week visiting my Mom.
The question is, PE, EE or both?? I see fgruber has success with an EE, but not jmgazer, so maybe some EEs have trouble with it. My EE is my primary Reader, so it would be most useful there.
