Because Covenant was one character of many. The Giants, the Lords, the Bloodguard, the Ranyhyn, and The Land itself. These were the things you were supposed to fall in love with... which was pretty easy to do considering what a puke Covenant was—and later Linden Avery. Those two characters are the most frustrating, annoying, self-loathing characters I've come across in fantasy (except for possibly Hobb's Nevare Burvelle). I loved hating them.

I'm not saying everyone/anyone should love it. Quite the contrary. Hate it all you want. I just get a kick out of hearing "I didn't like the protagonist" when you weren't supposed to.
