I'm not quite sure what you have against removing DRM. It's been turned in to a simple process for B&N, Adobe encryption, and the Kindle formats. Once you remove it, Calibre will convert the book into the format of your choice. Getting a device that can be rooted to Android and then running apps for the different bookstores sounds more difficult and greatly limits your choices.

As you've discovered with the matrix, there are several readers that aren't as well known as the top four. The PocketBook has an enthusiastic fan base and company representatives here at MobileRead. I'm not sure if their latest readers have a Pearl screen.
