Unfortunately I don't think you can download directly onto the reader the way you're thinking with the Kobo or Nook. You'd have to download on a computer then sideload onto the reader. The new Sony may let you download direct (some claims anyway, but since it isn't released it hasn't really been confirmed).
If you're happy to sideload, I have to recommend the Kobo Touch. It's a nice little reader that they are constantly improving. Currently it lacks a search function (rumoured to be coming) and "bookshelves", but you can add your own fonts, huge number of font sizes and margin/spacing differences possible and none of the memory is "reserved" for company only books like the Nook has.
