Having looking into the question of battery life and charging regimes a while ago the general consensus of opinion is that the lithium polymer batteries that are used in these readers prefer to be charged little and often.
It would appear that the worst thing you can do is to keep running them flat. As they do not suffer the memory problems of older rechargeable batteries there is no reason not to keep them in a state of near full charge.
As for wall chargers I don't understand the problem. Why not buy a charger specific to your reader? I bought one for my 650 from Amazon for less than £5 and it works fine.
And I'm also puzzled about the 'loading new content degrading the battery'. Loading new content is the same to your battery as just turning it on to read. It's just a dumb battery it cannot tell if it is loading new content to the memory or just being asked to refresh the screen, either way it is just a drain on the battery of varying levels.
