I have a Kindle 2 which is the older model and no problems whatsoever surfing the web via 3G (besides the fact that it's kind of slow and pages take forever to go through). Mind you, I'm in the BC Lower Mainland in one of the suburban metropolitan areas; I don't know what the reception would be like while camping.
But I imagine that if you can get decent cellphone access where you're staying, then the 3G would work as well.
