You can go back to 1.7.0 if you want to use collections. I had the same problem.
@DiapDealer, With 1.7.1 it doesn't matter how many you have downloaded. I had 10 and 900+ archived. 1.7.1 checked every archived book till it crashes. 1.7.0 doesn't have this problem.
