That's pretty much what I do. Just put what I want to read on my Kindle.
When I finish reading a book, I move them into a collection. So all the unreads are visible from the home screen since they aren't in a collection.
And I can count how many I've read by just seeing the numbers of each collection. (273 books since getting my Kindle about a year ago, whenever K3s came out. Not bad)
