Your original complaint/observation was about the next_free option of the tweak not the first_free option. I haven't tried this tweak but Kovid's post was specifically about the next_free option of the tweak. These are two different tweak options. If you don't want to try the first_free tweak option that's fine with me but Kovid did not address the first_free option in his post.
Maybe I'm reading the tweak wrong.
