That article has been discussed here before and it's nonsense. It does not relate to the population as a whole; it relates only to those Hunch readers who responded to the survey.
There *is* an accurate way to conduct polls in which you can obtain a statistically valid result (with a 95% confidence level within the margin of error). They do this for elections and are usually quite accurate. But the trick is to find a small sample (2-3000 people) that is representative of the population as a whole is relevant ways (same age, income, race, political party membership, etc. of the population as a whole).
But this is not what hunch did - they just compiled all the answers that they got to their survey, which has no meaning at all.
(Nielson, by contrast, has produced some valid numbers. But they are less interesting as linkbait).
