Not that books necessarily make someone more intelligent but reading certainly requires a certain level of brain power and requires more critical thinking than a diet of People magazine or American Idol does.

And no, I don't mean those who are unfortunately illiterate. I mean those who are perfectly able but just don't for whatever reason.
I've met plenty of people who don't read for pleasure. Some are friends and some are family members. I don't ask them for a justification because it's not something that needs to be justified. It's just their preference and it's fine with me. Whether someone reads or not says nothing to me about their intelligence or intellect. I've met readers who I found to be a bit shallow in terms of intellect and non-readers who I could actually hold very interesting conversations with.
