Very true. Modern high-impact plastics (such as the Kindle uses) are very tough. Go to the Kindle forum and you certainly won't see a flood of reports of broken screens. Of course there have been flimsy plastic readers (the Bookeen CyBook Gen3, for example) but the readers from the big-name manufacturers all seem to be well-made.
