A little more research gave me an answer I may try out later: my MacBook Pro was purchased in early 2011, as such it comes with a 64 bit kernel. If I startup holding '3' and '2' on the keyboard, it will boot a 32 bit kernel, and the software may work right.
My only issue doing this is that I use 64 bit kernel software and it would prevent me using these while doing this.
It's a rough annoying thing to have to do just to purchase a few books for your ebook reader. Sony, move with the times and port to 64 bit, please!
