As an additional note, if you recognise which books you've read or haven't read as you look at the device book list, you can manually add them to or remove them from (as appropriate) the Unread collection by selecting books in the list and using the "Mark read" or "Mark unread" actions. In your case, it sounds like you'd want to use the "Mark read" action to get them off the list. That might be faster than opening the books individually.
