Yes - they did move the Hatteras lighthouse further inland. I was lucky enough to visit it and climb to the top before it was closed off to the public as "unsafe." I'll never forget that rickety, rusty metal spiral staircase. It's unforgettable to view the ocean from that height - you see the waves break on shore before you hear the sound.
Irene is predicted to intensify to cat. 3 before slamming into the NC coast and barrier islands - which are so flat that storm surge can completely cover them. Inland, central NC is now predicted to have 25-50 mph winds and rain. So we're still preparing for power outages and tying down the trash cans & lawn furniture.
