The only reason you don't get the WSOD with 1.6 is because it isn't pushing the video chip quite as hard. If you run an app that requires a lot of video output you could still get the WSOD with 1.6 on your hardware.

That's true. With 2.2 i got WSOD straight out of the box.
Last night i tried 2.2 few times, upgraded from 1.6 to try how it works.
First boot worked fine, but after the display wet sleeping and i woke it up, there was WSOD again

Tried few time waking the device up and down, WSOD came almost every time. Downgraded to 1.6 and it was gone.
The new kernel and new display driver in 2.2 is handling the LCD initiliaztion wrong, sometimes when it wokes up you can see the timing is off, like it was almost fully WSOD but you can see fuzzy text, then it suddenly survives and everything is normal.
