Why so dismissive? Any democratic election is "nothing more than a popularity contest."
What could be more important on a community forum than the opinion of the population? What other value does a public post have but to garner reaction from the public?
I'd find somewhat disingenuous if not downright pathetic for someone to post publicly and then claim they don't care what people think. That's what diaries and journals are for.

I think Karma is a silly thing given for so many reasons that it really does not mean much. I recognize that my Karma is high because I have had fun posting in the drink thread and my friends there give me karma for posts giving info on tea and advice relationship. Heck, people are getting karma now to make palidromes.
And I am ok with that. I think that it is fun and goofy and perfectly legit.
This does mean that Karma really is based on being in the right topics and having fun with your friends which makes it a bit of a popularity contest.

Like I said, not a big deal but there is nothing wrong with calling it what it is.
I give karma for helpful posts, just about everyone who has given me advice in the tablet thread has gotten karma, but I give karma for making me smile, mainly in threads like this one or the drink thread. The smile karma does tend to go to the same people more often then not.
