The older models had resistive screens which I understand are awful. The newer ones have capacitive screens. As well with Archos stay away from the home tablets because they are the cheaper versions- underpowered, cheaper screens etc.

I have an Archos 70 internet tablet (Gen 8 released in 2010) and have never had a problem with it (Android 2.3 and regular firmware updates to tweak things). I use it primarily for magazines, movies and tv and basic surfing and it does fine.

I'd be leery of the older tablets from Archos but then again would probably say the same about every other tablet manufacturer since screens and processing power have increased with each new model.
