Aren't there also a lot of eReaders (and apps) that may not use ADE for EPubs (like Coolreader, FBReader, Stanza, iBooks, ...)? Do these all use the same page numbering scheme?
I like the option (or no option) to make a screen a page. I usually just do linear reading, with no referencing.
