He was indeed born in New Zealand, although purse-lipped he's described as British in some sources. Mind you, back then New Zealanders did tend to think of themselves as British. And he did spend much of his life involved with things British.
The song's a homegrown Kiwi one, by a folk singer, so I'm not surprised you haven't heard it.
