You can reward karma points to posts that you feel were helpful or enjoyable in some way. The points that you awarded, are added to the amount of points that the post author has in total, and everyone can see their total. In theory, the more karma points a person has, the more helpful or active community member they are.
This is used to differentiate things a bit from post counts, since some people can have a high post count and be a problematic forum member, or have few posts but be extremely helpful when they do post. For instance, some developers of various popular ebook programs come to the forums, and even have subforums for their apps. They may not be extremely active, since they could spend their free time working on their particular app, but still be extremely valued members of the community.
