I don't hold my phone close to my face (unless it's to use it as a phone, in which case, I'm holding it next to my ear). In general, the distance at which I use my phone and tablet are the same. However, it's true that the 330 ppi might very well be overkill. While I find fonts noticeably smoother on the iPhone compared to the Sony PRS-350, the latter is already pretty decent. It's not necessarily CPU power that would be required to fill the screen. Assuming the sole purpose of the higher resolution is to smooth out the screen and not actually display more data, then it's just faster GPU that's needed.
