One of the neatest things about Lovecraft was his sense of making Sci-Fi something new--not merely Westerns with helmets in lieu of ten gallon hats, but an interesting realm where we are not alone, and we are farked b/c of it. In most of his works, there is the overwhelming power of things greater than mankind.
The boy could be quite over the top, and some stories easily lend themselves to that violin "ZING!" at the final denouement, but overall he was big on setting a mood.
