You can play with the weight of the font, making it bolder or thinner. Use glyph transform tool, select Effects / Bold or Effects / Thin.
Remember how the font looks on your computer isn't how it will look on the kindle. You just have to load it on and see. Restart kindle to make new font take effect.

I have just changed serif font in the font hack folder(linkfonts) and I think that it works.
I have problem with fonts because not all of them have Russian (cyrillic) letters. With them I can read only English books. I'm looking for Kindle standard(native) font ttf file to change it.
