Amazon's not preventing Sony from selling mobi ebooks--they're refusing to share their DRM method. Remove the DRM requirement, and Amazon loses their market lock-in.
Sony's (and other bookstores') unwillingness to offer non-DRM'd ebooks is not Amazon's fault.

Originally, Sony did want to add MobiPocket and not ePub, and They were told by Amazon that they'd have to drop support for the LRX drm, because MobiPocket's licenses requires that it be the only DRM system supported on the device. This was way before the ePub switch.
It often is a demand of the publisher to have DRM, not the store.
