The problem is that when you release a book on Kindle ONLY, folks like me who don't convert between formats can't read the books on our e-readers, which is why we HAVE our e-readers: to read on them.

So if I can follow your logic, authors have an obligation to have their works published in every language, and in every format including audio so that everyone, everywhere can read/hear them in the way they wish?
You chose a kobo as your e-reader. The author chose to publish at Amazon. Move on.
