I could never understand the appeal of diamonds. I used to spend hours in front of the huge gemstone displays in N.Y. City's Museum of Natural History, drooling over the sapphires, rubies, emeralds, etc., but the diamonds were just bleh...

They had several of the vary famous stones on display from time to time, but even those big Elizabeth Taylor sized diamonds didn't move me. Give me aluminum oxide over carbon any day!

I used to buy sapphires, jade, and rubies along the Burmese border. Every three months I had to go up there for visa renewals, and would bring back a stone or two. Over the years I built up a nice collection. Nothing big or expensive, but fun stuff to keep in a little leather pouch in my drawer.
