Amazon and Audible have been 'publishing' effectively for several years. They're not tied to an outdated print/plastic model with the inherent cost of distribution. Moreover they don't need to battle, bribe or bargain for shelf space nor need they spend money to buy attention. Most critically, freed from these legacy expenses, Bezos can offer authors immediate world wide distribution and pay a better royalty.
If they can wean authors off the 'advance' teat, consumers and creators win equally with a fair profit for the 'publisher' as well.
