Hi all,
I'm new to eBooks and this forum, but as I got an unexpected gift (Kobo Touch) from my better half last saturday I thought I should had a few data points to the discussion. First of all I am not a computer newbie, and I mostly use a Win7 computer.
To sum up my experience with the device, I had to do four factory resets in the first three days (1 saturday within an hour of opening the box, 1 sunday and 2 yesterday - none today but it's only morning and I haven't played with it yet).
What I did:
- find free ebooks with the Desktop application and sync them to the reader
- drag and drop some PDF files I had on the PC (manuals and tech documentation - the font sizing problem hit me right away)
- find free eBooks on Project Gutenberg and upload them to the Touch, first via drag&drop, then with ADE, then with Calibre
- find free french language eBooks from various sources and upload them with Calibre (incidentally, I would have expected a unit sold in Canada to come in french as well as english - since I'm travelling in BC, soon to go back home, I hope the french version of the FW is not too far down the road or the kids won't be able to use it).
The problems has happened when disconnecting after dropping files, when synching with the desktop application after dropping files or uploading them with ADE or Calibre, or even when opening a new book on the unit after reading another one.
It seems random, the message is unspecific at best, and there doesn't seem to be a way out of it save for resetting everything, reinstalling the FW 1.9.9, configuring it again and synching books back to it.
Since I like the format of the unit and it is a gift, I have been going out of my way to get it to work for me but it is a tiring, tedious process. I can sort of get along with it at the moment, but I wouldn't buy another unit for my wife or kids as it is!
this is my experience so far. I hope it gets better, much better, soon...
Francois
EDIT: After reading a book and putting down the unit this afternoon it went to standby as expected. But when I took it out of standby, I got a frozen screen. No amount of touching it would do anything, nor going to standby again. And after I powered it down, surprise surprise, on power up I got the error!
