Well, they are young adult novels, after all. And since the early ones preceded Harry Potter by about twenty years, I'm not sure it's quite fair to say they don't work well in the footsteps of HP. They're very different kinds of books, in any case. But obviously, everyone's tastes won't agree. If you don't like it by the end of Book 2 (which I seem to recall is stronger than book 1), then you probably won't like the rest. But I'd try to read that much, anyway.

Diane Duane herself noted that her writing has matured since those early books, which is one reason she's revising the first few for new editions.
