I think kids are going to be disappointed that the book isn't just like the movie from a couple years ago.

Personally, as with Huck Finn, Song of the South, Birth of a Nation, and a lot of H. P. Lovecraft's work, I think it should be understood as a cultural artifact and left alone. This is the way many people thought when these works were created.
