A couple of thoughts
- is there some sort of DRM involved? This may be unlikely because you can convert with Calibre.
- can you read all the pages on a PC? If so then it might be the original PDF is saved using a version incompatible with the edge reader software (there used to be a 'colorspace' problem that would mess up older third party readers on Linux and OS/2).

If the second option is true then try saving the PDF as one compatible with Acrobat 5.

Something I should have asked - which book is it? I'll see if I can get it and have a look at the problem.
