My avatar is a self taken picture of "our nearest neighbour". The Andromeda Galaxy some 2,2 million light years away. The Andomeda Galaxy is the most distant astronomical object that can be observed "naked eye".

(It's taken with an ordinary digital camera with a 200mm telephoto lens, piggybacked on an equatorial mount to compensate for Earths rotation. A 4 minutes exposure).
