From your post, it sounds like you're not too picky, so I think you'll be happy with any one you decide on.

Your only major concern seems to be library books. At this time, Kindle does not support them. However, Kindle will start supporting them later this year, I think. So, your choices are still really wide open as pretty much all other brands support library books.

As discussed, I'd also recommend waiting until later this year for you. You say you are fine with waiting, and you'll get to see all the newer models coming out for the holiday season (rumours are models will start being announced September/October). Plus, if you decide to go with a current model that will be "old" once a newer one comes out soon, it will probably be cheaper to buy it later this year than it is now.

Your main four options in brand are Kindle, Sony, nook and Kobo. Since you're not too picky, you'll probably want to go with one of them as they're the easiest to research and look at and all that. The only caveat is if you want a really really cheap one and find a smaller brand selling a cheaper reader.

Kindle has the largest community, often has the cheapest books to buy and has excellent customer service. A big drawback for some is limiting yourself to their DRM.

Sony is the most expensive of the big brands, but many say it has the best hardware.

nook has the advantage of being tied to a physical book store.

Kobo is the cheapest of the major brands (although not that much cheaper than the Kindle or nook).

I was going to go a little more in-depth on what the different brands offer, but honestly, with new models coming out, who knows what will be offered. Kindle is rumoured to have touch screen coming, maybe even colour. Who knows what Sony is adding or changing.
