I highly recommend
The Code Book. It's a wonderful book, one of my all-time favourites. Beautifully written, full of historical, technical and human stories, covering from the very basic to the most elaborate ciphers. There's also a freely downloadable CD (the crypto CD) at Simon Singh's website, with additional material.
