Help with Calibre/Kobo

I need an easy, step by step how-to on getting books I have downloaded onto my Kobo using Calibre without it freezing up, please

First of all, if I could read pdf files on my Kobo without the font being so incredibly small, I would be happy. However, when I increase the font, the text goes off the screen from side to side and top to bottom so I have to use the arrows to read. That is just a horrible way to read! It would solve my problem right there if there were a way to format the books so I don't have to do that if someone knows how.

I have been using Calibre to reformat my books into epubs so that I can read them on my Kobo and at first had no problems. Then it started freezing up and only resetting it would get my Kobo operating again, with of course, no books loaded onto the device. I have searched and searched and just haven't found an easy and understandable fix to this problem.

Unfortunately, with the economy, I can't buy the dozen or so books I used to every month, so switched to Kobo to save money. That also means I'm downloading books from the nice folks all over the web who are kind enough to post books that can be downloaded for free. Maybe that's the problem? Please save the replies regarding the morality of that. I would just like to be able to relax after a hard day's work and rest my aching back with a good book.

Thanks!
