My brother is Brandon Sanderson's assistant (Peter Ahlstrom, the one who gets a different adjective in each acknowledgements). Detailed magic systems are what he does best. It's not going to appeal to everyone. I have found that his writing has gotten a lot better since Elantris (that one, I enjoyed the story but the writing was just a bit rough).

I still haven't read Way of Kings (shhhh!) but it's on my list. I did enjoy Mistborn and will probably give it a re-read in the next couple of years. There's a new Mistborn book coming out (Alloy of Law) that's set about 300 years later. I got to read the ARC just last month and liked it a lot. (It's quite a bit shorter, which may be a plus for some people!)

Warbreaker is also pretty good (and the Alcatraz Vs. The Evil Librarians series, though those aren't available as ebooks).
