I give karma to any posts that are informative, well though out (whether I agree or not) and ones that are funny. I also give a lot of karma in the Reading Recommendations forum. I've given Karma to people that just seemed to need a pick-me-up because something bad happened in their lives. I try to give karma to the people in the Calibre forum that are extremely helpful as often as I can.

What I would like to see is who I have given karma to, and for which post I gave it to them for. I'm here at MR while at work everyday (shame on me) and sometimes it gets busy and I forget if I've given karma to some of the great posts I've read throughout the day.
