I would recommend you read
March Upcountry the first book in the Empire of Man series before you give up on him completely. It does start off with the main character being an annoying brat, but the story as he grows is great. You can read them free from the link I posted earlier in the thread.
Live free or Die is another good one, but it isn't available for free yet.
