As a developer myself I understand about just show the clock and forget about updating it - because after a minute it will be wrong. And after 10 minutes, and you miss your bus, you will blame ME.

What about this usage model - show the clock for 1 minute. Then, blank it out and don't worry about updating the menu screen again.

(ps. I am a s/w developer but not for Kobo in case that is not clear!)
