I thought what people were asking for here was a clock that is _only_ visible from the middle-tap screen. i.e. it would go away when the middle-tap icons are hidden (when reading). With this design, you'd only have to update the clock once, when the middle-tap screen is first displayed -- and not any more for the time the middle-tap screen stays open.
