It sounds like you're talking about the PDA equivalent of Delicious Monster's product. If you haven't seen or used it, its probably the slickest OSX application I have ever seen, and a bargain for the price. Just check out that screenshot for a look at what it does.... slick slick stuff.

Basically you take any book, dvd, cd and stick it in front of your iSight camera. It scans the barcode, finds the details of the item, and stores it on a "virtual shelf", which you can use to trade, share, organize, sort, and lots of other things. I know I'm not giving it the justice it deserves, but you really should check it out... or find someone with a Mac and see it in action on their end.

Picture that, "lending" someone your mp3 collection via beam or Bluetooth, and "borrowing" theirs, through the same sort of mechanism, or perhaps a middleware server that maintains those transactions. You could trade and "check out" (ala library) songs or playlists from them, and they could do the same for your music.

Go visit their website and read up on all of their features. Now roll some of those back into your requirements for a PDA product, hit Rent-a-Coder and submit a bid, and see who bites. You might be surprised, depending on your level of funding...

Neat stuff.
