iRex was working to get agreements in place with other providers besides Verizon, which is why the hardware was designed to use a SIM card. However, the only one they ever worked out business agreements for was Verizon, so there may be software issues still remaining. I assume that if they eventually had worked out something with AT&T/etc that a firmware update would be required.

One warning they gave on their forum when this came up, was that some providers not only look at whether or not the SIM is authorized on their network, but also somehow know what device it is being used in. They cautioned that a provider might block your SIM if they see it being used in an unknown device.

I don't know much about the technical details myself, so can't say if that's really true or not, or what the risk would be. Just passing it on as something they said about user community developers working on ways to get the DR800 using another 3G network.
