To delete books, go into the library on the Kobo Touch -- no USB required -- find the book in question, click on the stacked horizontal lines icon, and select "delete".
For most everyday tasks (assuming you are not loading unloading fonts daily), delete in the library works just fine and does not require messing with wires or OSes.
