It already gives you a prompt, though, to disable airplane mode if you attempt to sync, go to the store, or use the web browser while it's enabled. Tapping the airplane symbol to enter a network discovery mode might be nice for some people, I suppose, though personally I can't see the use of it since I'd only want the wi-fi to go to the store, sync, or do a spot of web browsing...
