I know that sometimes I'm just not in the right mood or perhaps mindset for certain books, and it's best to put them aside until that genre or storyline once again piques my interest. Can take a month, can take several years.
I remember I went to the movies once with my mom to see the movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy". I was appalled by it because I saw it as denigrating the tribesmen, while my mother sitting next to me was splitting her sides laughing. Two people with relatively similar attitudes, yet we interpreted the film completely differently - she saw it as it was meant to be presented, while I was applying an assumption to it that wasn't intended by its creators.
