Smooth and fast, yes! The whole thing will just run faster under 2.2

And I also have the "last stroke doesn't show up until you write another new stroke" issue, but that started just before I upgraded to 2.2, so I don't think it's because of the upgrade.

You'll notice that, even at 1.6, the writing may lag behind a bit (often depends on how complicated your background screen is, the pdf or whether you choose blank, lined, graph paper etc.). You just have to train yourself to keep going, trusting that it will in fact capture every stroke. Usually it does.
