The obvious question is WHY !
I keep about 200 on my PRS 650 which takes about 30 seconds to refresh and is enough for a couple years of reading.

The answer to this question remains the same no matter how many times it's repeated by however many different people!!!
Choice... what happens if I finish a book and my mood is such that none of my vast 200 odd books meet what I feel like reading right now... I have a portable, pocket library which works wonderfully with 25K books on it... I never have to worry about what to read because I can always find something on my eReader no matter what my mood... and who gives a damn about maybe never finishing everything I've got... I don't care, I'd be a really irritated if I fancied reading something I'd come across previously but not bothered with as "I'll never have time to read it," it doesn't matter, what I care about is having, what I might want to read sometime, available any time...
If that's not your way then fine, you like what you do and others like the way they do things... if you don't understand our way then, frankly, that's your problem, I understand your tight and limited needs but what I can't understand is your inability to appreciate others differ...
