Importing metadata when creating epub

I am building an original epub book from html + css files. I wish to enter the metadata from a text file. I can't download from the usual places which describe already-published books. Is there a way to import the metadata?

Since I am developing the format as well as the content, I need to generate new epub copies frequently, and would like to import the metadata by calling it from a file.

I recognize that I can open the epub after it is generated by calibre and include a file with the metata, then re-zip. Is there another way?
